WebAuthn Authentication

Proof Keys Studio uses WebAuthn for secure, passwordless authentication. No passwords to remember - just use your device's built-in security.

What is WebAuthn?

WebAuthn is a modern authentication standard that uses:

  • Your device's security: Touch ID, Face ID, Windows Hello, or security keys
  • No passwords: Eliminates password-related security issues
  • Phishing resistant: Credentials are bound to the website
  • Fast and convenient: Sign in with a touch or glance

Registering Your Account

When you register:

  1. Enter any username you want (e.g., alice, bob, my-company)
  2. Click Continue
  3. Your browser shows a security prompt
  4. Use your device's security method:
  5. Touch ID (MacBook, iPhone)
  6. Face ID (iPhone, iPad)
  7. Windows Hello (Windows PC)
  8. Security key (USB or NFC key like YubiKey)
  9. Fingerprint (Android devices)

That's it! Your account is created and you're signed in.

Note: If you see "Could not register this username", someone else is already using that username. Try a different one.

Signing In

To sign in to your existing account:

  1. Enter your username
  2. Click Continue
  3. Use the same security method you used when registering
  4. You're signed in!

If you see "No credential on file", you need to register first.

Anonymous Access

For quick access without an account:

  1. Type "ANONYMOUS" as the username
  2. Click Continue
  3. You're signed in immediately (no security prompt)

Anonymous users: - Can use the app immediately - Limited to 1 key - Can sign out like regular users - Great for quick testing or temporary use

Browser Support

WebAuthn works in:

  • Chrome/Edge: Full support (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android)
  • Firefox: Full support (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android)
  • Safari: Full support (macOS, iOS)
  • Opera: Full support

Make sure you're using an up-to-date browser.

Security Features

WebAuthn provides:

  • No passwords: Can't be stolen or guessed
  • Phishing resistant: Credentials only work on the correct website
  • Device-bound: Your credentials are tied to your device
  • Multi-factor: Uses your device's built-in security (biometrics, PIN, etc.)

Troubleshooting

"WebAuthn not supported in this browser" - Update your browser to the latest version - Use a modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)

"No credential on file for this username" - You need to register first - Go to the Sign up page and create an account

"Could not register this username" - That username is already taken - Try a different username

Security prompt doesn't appear - Make sure your device's security is set up (Touch ID, Face ID, etc.) - Check that your browser has permission to use your device's security
